10 lessons of 2010

10. College doesn't accept your High School games.
In High School you can get away with things like procrastination and waiting until the last minute to do things, in college, you are just going to kill yourself and waste a bunch of money.

9. Coupons and membership cards are your best friends while shopping.
When I got stressed out in college I found that shopping was the least destructive and fastest way to recover from the stress no matter how bad it was. But that costs a lot of money. I can't express how much money I saved myself by getting a discount card or looking for Coupons and special deals before going out and shopping.

8. Always follow what you believe in even if nobody will listen.
At least you can say you tried with no regrets on what you could have done differently by trying in the first place. You will walk away knowing you're not just a talker but you make things happen and it made a small difference to someone for them to know you fought for them.

7. The trails that brought you somewhere make you stronger so you can always make it through.
I would not be the person I am now without the hardships I have faced to bring me here in the first place. that mindset reminds me that giving up now will make that pain worth nothing when I could turn that pain into the ticket I need to succeed. Not saying use it as an excuse on why you should get what you want but as a reason why you deserve it and what you want isn't so hard to get to anymore.

6. Just because things don't work out exactly how you want them to doesn't mean hope is lost.
Sometimes you gotta look into another direction and look at things from another view. Life is like a prism: You look through another side and you see it with a new view. Sometimes you need to do this in order to really make the best of your life situations.

5. Take risks.
You never know how that risk could change your life. If you go on with life fearing rejection then the only thing there is to gain is  fear and that will only hold you back more. apply for that job you didn't think you'd ever get, ask out the cutest guy, go to that party. have you ever seen the movie Yes Man? Watch it then live it. You need to experience those things you're always saying no to in order to know what it's like to really love and live.

4. Going alone for something you love will never leave you alone.
Don't follow what everyone else does just because you feel like it's the safer game to play. I must say you have to refer to number 5 on this one but even moreso You can't really discover who you are with everyone in your way. Sometimes you have to go at it alone.

3. Jehovah Jireh
God will always provide for what you really need in your life and won't ever let you down.

2. The ones in your life you can always trust are the ones that have never left you in the first place.
I've been friends with my best friend since I was nine years old and even though there have been rough patches in my friendship with her, as soon as I've needed her back she's been right there waiting without bringing up my past mistakes to throw into my face no matter how badly I'd treated our friendship in the past. Now she's the first person I go to when I don't know what to do and I do my best to be able to do the same in return for her as well.

1. Love doesn't always mean forever.

Sometimes you need to love someone so they can hold onto your heart and then smash it to bits. the cracks in your heart are there to let a new light shine through. You can't know love until you've felt heartbreak but in order for the heartbreak to occur you must allow yourself to love someone for just a little bit of time and allow yourself to become vulnerable and breakable.

2010 was one of the best years of my life. I'm excited for what 2011 brings me.

Once Upon A Time

There was a little girl
She loved to read and would read any book that came into her hands
She read everything,
Little Women,
Hunchback of Notre Dame,
Oliver Twist...

But the book she read the most was Peter Pan

She would want to be just like him,
She'd dress up as him
and play on her playground that she was him.
Fighting Pirates
and Playing with the Indians.
She wore the pages of the book in
reading the words over and over again
until the words on the page
became her script for her every day life.

She related to Peter Pan more than anyone else in existence.
She knew, with premature mourning,
that her childhood and innocence
was only temporary
and one day she would have to grow up
and become an adult
and work and have children of her own.
and forget about the childhood she was passionately in love with.

During the daylight hours
She would go through the woods and the forests
searching for faeries that could tell her the secrets of how to escape this fleeting world she lived in.
But then the sun would set,
and she'd be forced back inside of her house.
With no faerie dust to preserve her.

Late nights
she would carefully climb out of her window,
silently as to not wake her sister sleeping beside her
or her parents down the hall,
and she would sit on the rooftop.
She would search for Peter in the night sky

"Second star from the right, and straight on until morning."
She would whisper.

and when the hours would pass,
and nobody would come and rescue her,
she would climb back inside,
and fall asleep in her bed.

Years went by and her childhood fantasy world fell apart around her.
She started to work and go to school and grow up.
No more dressing up,
No more fighting pirates,
No playing with Indians,
and No searching for faeries...
She was an adult now.

She had forgotten about her love for Peter.

Sometimes,
she dreamed that it wasn't too late,
and she could still be rescued.
But then she would fall to sleep when she realized,
there was almost nothing left to be saved anymore.

Light Chasers- Cloud Cult

I feel like I changed last week when I went to my first concert at First Avenue.
First Avenue is a place in downtown Minneapolis that has existed for more than a few years.... my MOTHER had gone to concerts at First Ave when she was a teenager. That's how old it is.
I'm not quite sure what I can say in response to the Cloud Cult show but all I can say is I changed a little bit on the inside. It was the most amazing experience I'd had in a very long time and I am not quite sure how to react to this.

Their album Light Chasers is a story in their track list

1. The Mission: Unexplainable Stories
2. The Departure: Today We Give Ourselves to the Fire
3. The Invocation (p.1) - You'll Be Bright
4. The Birth
5. The Baby - You Were Born
6. The Lessons - Exploding People
7. The Interference
8. The Battles - Room Full of People in Your Head
9. The Escape - Running With the Wolves
10. The Acceptance - Responsible
11. The Surrender - Guessing Game
12. The Strength - Forces of the Unseen
13. The Invocation (p.2) - Blessings
14. The Awakening - Dawn
15. The Contact
16. The Arrival - There's So Much Energy In Us

The songs I love the most are You'll be Bright, Forces of the Unseen, Exploding People, and Running with the Wolves.
I loved when they played these songs at their show at First Ave on November 18th when I was there. there was SO much energy in the crowd of people all singing around me and I got lost within the music and the Art painting that two member of the band do during the performace was beautiful. My Camera died before I could get a final photo and most of the pictures I find online of their First Ave performance is from the 21+ show the night before that I obviously couldn't attend due to the fact that I'm only 18.
But if you would like to see Scott West's work his Art blog is http://theartofscottwest.blogspot.com/ << Simple enough isn't it?
Connie Minowa who is the wife of the lead singer of the bad is the other visual artist http://www.connieminowa.com/

Okay well if you haven't heard Cloud Cult EVER you really should. They are amazing and they have been around for about fifteen years and they are Minnesota natives which makes me just absolutely love them more. They always bring me up from my low states even when their songs are about depression Craig finds a light at the end of just about any tunnel.

Underneath I'm posting a video of one of their studio performances, and then I'm also going to post one of their music videos. Give you the chance to check them out yourself! and if you find them ever in your area, Don't hesitate to go see them live. If you don't love them after that you have no soul!

Purple is the color of LOVE < 3

Today is Spirit Day and GLAAD ( Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has asked that people wear purple today as a call to attention towards the six young teenagers that committed suicide on account to harassment for their sexual orientation.

It bother's be a lot that teenagers would commit suicide like this, but what almost bother's me more is the fact that is was the harassment and abuse from their peers that pushed these teenagers to this brink of suicide.
Homophobia was the bullet. Hate pulled the trigger.
This needs to stop.

The reason that these children have this hatred towards homosexuals, is most likely because this hate is being taught. No hate just exists for no reason, hate is taught. We are all born innocent knowing nothing of the world and around us, from our teachers, parents, and friends, we learn how this world should be formed. It's too often that we use hate instead of love to form our world. It's not right.

These teenagers were so young and had so much of their lives that they could have lived but instead they exist as only memories to those that loved them and ghosts to those that taunted them.

These suicides could have happened to just about anyone. Harassment and bullying happens to kids because they are gay, because they are a different color, because the look strange, because they have a different religion. This is HATE. Hate can only cause Hurt, it does nothing to make our world a better place.

Today as I wear purple I remember peace and equality.
Purple is the color of balence, it brings together two very different colors with two completely differnt personalities together to create something beautiful and new, it's the color of peace and comfort. Purple is the color of harmony. Purple is the color we should use to paint our world.

Today I ask for you to teach your children LOVE.

Teach your children that they are all brothers and sisters,
God created us all equal and beautiful,
We are all special,
We all deserve to be loved.
and Love creates a better world for us all.

Today remember the type of pain hate brings, and bring in love to fill what hate has rotted away from our world.

Rah Rah Ah Ah Riah!

Hey I'm Riah! I'm 18 and a First Year college student. I'm born and raised from Minnesota and I love it like words cannot describe! So to start off my blog I'm going to post 15 random facts about myself!

1. My favorite color is Purple! And no, not strictly because of the Vikings because I wear purple year round. It fits my personality perfectly because Purple is wild and intense and bold but also at the same time it can be calm and cool and collected.

2. I have the most odd taste in music. I love stuff such as Owl City, Miniature Tigers, or Maudlin, and then I'll listen to Usher, Lady Gaga and N'Sync. You really can just never know what to expect what's going to come up next on my playlist. However, my current music obsession is Cloud Cult and the title of my blog is actually a Cloud Cult song and so is my URL name thing. (A Girl Underground, and 2x2x2)

3.I'm the oldest of four children. I have a sister who is 14 named "Chacha" who is in her first year of High School right now, a brother named "Zeik" who is 12 years old, and a baby sister I call "Libby" who is 10 years old. Even though they can get on my LAST nerve I've sacrificed a lot for my love for these kids even though they can be brats sometimes.

4. I'm double majoring in English and Biology but I may switch to double minoring with Education and Biology. I have yet to decide yet what I'm doing with all that except I know I want to be a teacher. I've always loved teaching and I want that to be what I do with my life. I love children a lot.

5. I collect stuffed Panda Bears! I love panda's sooo much and I have no idea why because it's a little strange of me but I just really love Panda bears a lot!

6. I like to play sports! Soccer and Football are my top favorite sports but I'm really interested in getting into Rugby. I just need to figure out how ha ha. I'm really aggressive and competitive and I am not very good at sports but I just love playing.... Love it more when I win. :)

7. The reason I live in Minnesota officially is because the Twins beat the Braves in the World Series back in '91. My dad is from Georgia and my mother is from here in Minnesota. They met and married My parents were already sorta planning to move to Minnesota but had not fully decided on it just yet. So, my parents placed a bet. Whoever won the world series would be the state they'd officially choose to live in. I am a Braves fan because I'm glad they lost because I love Minnesota. I know they threw that game on purpose.

8. I'm really affectionate. I love hugs and holding hands and playing with hair and just being cuddly! It's probably one of my favorite things ever! I'm just cuddly <3

9. One time, in my freshman year of high school I had just transferred schools and I accidentally took the wrong bus on like my 2nd day and I ended up at the wrong school. I had to call my parents and have my dad pick me up from the wrong High school and take to to the right one. It was really embarrassing.

10. I like attention. I can't stand feeling like I"m ignored or put down or like my opinion doesn't matter. I like to matter and be included. I Know that sounds like really weird or whatever but I just kinda don't like to be excluded.

11. I can almost entirely recite the movie Mean Girls for you. It is the most AMAZING movie to ever exist! It is basically my entire senior year which isn't such a good thing but it just makes the movie even better.

12. I'm learning, slowly, to speak Hmong. I have a lot of friends that are Hmong and so if you don't know how to speak any of the language you tend to get lost a lot in conversation because everyone swtiches between languages. Actually, it's weird for me to be in class or at school and the conversation not switch from English to some other language. I actually understand everything said in conversations now.

13. I'm really into astrology. I love to study star signs and things such as that and I can figure out a lot about a person just from knowing their birth date because I actually believe they are fairly accurate. I'm a Cancer sign so if you know what that means you can go ahead and start to figure out a lot about me. I have a strange attraction to Virgo males. I'm not sure how that happens but I just am. I seem to always surround myself with them or fall for them.

14. I like to play Piano and Guitar even though I'm not very good at either but I hope to learn and get better soon.

15. I was home schooled through 3rd grade, went to a Charter school from 4th until 6th, and then I went to an Online school, then I went to a Private Lutheran school and then a suburban public school then graduated from an inner city school. I have a diverse educational background.

Okay! That is 15 random facts all about me! Next blog post shall occur soon!

Living the College Life

So far in College I've been living a fantastic life.
I know I've chosen the right University and I know that every day.
However, It's so intimidating. I'm really scared to be at school because I feel like I"m not as smart as all of these kids around me. These kids make me feel like I'm lower than them and need to work even harder than them to even be considered decent. I am so scared I'm not as smart as any of them.
This place is intense. I mean,
I've been trying to understand my British Literature homework for the past 3 hours and I'm still stumped. and I want to cry because I've NEVER not understood literature before. and I'm so lost I want to cry.

I love college so much. But it scares the shiznits out of me.

Teenagers and Sex

Okay so all over the Media,

All around my school,

Teenagers everywhere

There is something really on on everyone's mind: Sex.

Image from www.spiegel.de

Teenagers are always talking about having sex. I mean, Secret Life of the American Teenager is basically an entire hour every week where teenagers plot how to get everyone in bed with each other and the consequences of their actions haven't been very realistic despite the fact that a character is pregnant.

Secret Life Amy and Ricky

I mean, every TV show is about Sex, every song is all about sex. Kids today are having sex at younger and younger ages. by age 19 7 out of 10 teenagers have engaged in sexual intercourse.

I cannot name how many teenagers I've known that have had sex over the past years while I was in high school. but I also can't name how many teenagers I've known to get pregnant or have pregnancy scares while in high school which has been scarry.

Some teenagers I've known have been wise enough to take precautions before having sex and have used birth control religiously. But 52% of teenagers have admitted to not using protection while having sex, and 24% of teenagers with an STD say they STILL have unprotected sex! A sexually active teen who does not use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year.

the most recent episode of Degrassi has character Jenna and KC dealing with an unexpected pregnancy after not using protection one time.

KC and Jenna of Degrassi Now with child

Even though sexual education is taught in schools, I don't think that knowing about sex and contraception is the simple answer. Teenagers don't know how to make long term decisions and also don't really have much reason to NOT have sex.

Yes there are lot's of Health reasons to wait and contraception tends to be the easy answer for the physical effects of having sex. But the emotional effects aren't always being taken into consideration by a teenager, or the long term results of being sexually active, or the psychological effects on their views of relationships.

People don't like to know about my opinion. Nobody cares about my opinion because all I am is a teenager that is right out of high school. but I know how everyone LOVES facts. so here is what I know:

Sexual activity or in fact any sort of physical contact with other human beings helps to release a chemical known as Oxytocin. It is a natural maternal chemical that is released after giving birth to help a mother bond with their child. This same chemical is released during orgasm and smaller amounts are released when you become aroused, make out, kiss, or hold hands.

Even though this is a maternal chemical men also release it just in smaller quantities and also in teenagers when hormones are raging the levels of this chemical tends to not be easily regulated.

This is, scientifically, why when couples have sex, the partners tend to become "clingy" and this makes it all the more devastating when a couple breaks up.

http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr95/jenosaurs/teenlove.jpg

Also the concept of "love" amongst teenagers, most teens would say "We're in love! and love=sex" However, with the imbalance of the Oxytocin chemical and the hormones of teenage puberty going absolutely out of control, Who is to know that your feelings are that of true love? or perhaps they are the feelings of growing up as a teenager.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk257/xyeahineedyouxx/love-6.jpg

I mean, when I was 13 I thought I was totally "in love" with a boy in my class! ((of course he didn't know I existed)) and then when I was 15 I was "in love" with my first boyfriend. But how am I supposed to think that was true love when I was still growing up and my hormones had more control over my mind then my true emotions and rational thinking?

It doesn't help when almost every couple on TV is having sex in their "healthy" relationships as if it's how you make a relationship "official", and when the relationship breaks down, the consequences of their actions tend to be minimal.

Teens who see and hear a lot about sex in the media may be more than twice as likely to have early sexual intercourse as those who are rarely exposed to sexual content.

Why? Because sometimes, these media teens are the only example kids in the real world have to help guide their relationship struggles.

This is because parents don't REALLY talk to their teenagers about sex. Lot's of parents don't know what to say and usually end up saying "Don't have sex." with "Because I said so." being the only reason.

and the Christian fundamentalists tend to simply say "Don't have sex until you're married." with "Because God said so." being their only reason.

http://www.thenationalcampaign.org/parents/images/tip2.jpg

Talk to your kids! Be REAL Be HONEST and tell them the TRUTH

Parents, I'm about to expose a dirty little secret that some of you may have: Your husband or wife (or your child's father or mother) probably wasn't the only person you had sex with.

I know parents are supposed to set an example by being the example but it's okay to be an example of what not to do as well! and for the parents that waited until they were married, explain the child the benefits you have had in your relationships by having sex with only your husband (For example never having to explain sexual history)

If your honest with your kids, you'll have an easier time getting them to be honest with you about their sexual experiences and what questions they have. If they aren't afraid to come to you, the ones that are sexually active will be less likely to engage in sex without protection for fear of parents finding their contraception- or even better maybe your words and honesty will be what's needed for them to understand why they may not really be ready.

Also be involved in their relationships. Be sure to invite over the boyfriends and girlfriends of your kids and try to at least shake hands with the parents, or invite them to dinner.

that's the key to preventing the mistakes lot's of teenagers make: Communication!

Teenagers I'm going to ask you to take a VERY awkward but beneficial first step: Ask your parents about WHY you shouldn't have sex or how old where they when they first had sex and tell them to be honest with you because trust goes both ways. And just suck it up and be honest with your parents by the way. Them being temporarily disappointed in you is a lot better than you ending up a parent for the rest of your life.

That's all I have to say for now. and I hope you all learned something from this especially since I'm a teenager myself and this is my perspective.

Now.... why are you still reading? Chop Chop! Get to talking!

Down The Rabbit Hole

Down the rabbit hole she goes
Her sister watches and she knows
she's going to where she's been before

can't help but laugh
can't resist to cry
as her past goes before her eyes

all her life she was warned
but her sister's words went on ignored.

"don't chase the rabbit
Drenched in blood.
all you love will come undone."

Little sister
little sister
please tell me you remember
of our coldest darkest winter
from which I tried to keep you sheltered.
Those are my footprints in the snow
On the path I prayed you would never ever go!

"don't chase the rabbit
Drenched in blood.
all you love will come undone."

little sister
little sister
tell me tell me can you hear
the sound of your life going
tick tock tick tock
all i can hear is the sound of your blood going
drip drop drip drop
the sound is so deafening it makes my
heart drop heart stop
stop
stop
stop
stop
stop
please stop.

"don't chase the rabbit
Drenched in blood.
all you love will come undone."

little sister
little sister

all her life she was warned
but her sister's words went on ignored.

Little sister little sister
stay back from the edge!
Don't play with that rabbit she's not your friend!
I never want to see you near that rabbit hole ever again.

all her life she was warned
but her sister's words went on ignored.

She slips
she falls
hearing her sister's voice
as she calls
for her to grab on
that she will stay strong
a promise to one day see the sun.

Down the rabbit hole
she won't fall
without taking her sister down as well
Down the rabbit hole

**So this is the poem I performed for the poetry competition. around the beginning I forgot my poem and just started making stuff up and I liked this way a lot better. I think it went well for stuff I came up with on the spot ha ha. but i appreciate feedback:D I'm super happy with how my forgetfulness paid off**
