Why This Middle-Aged Woman Loathes Twilight--An Encore
Here, again, are the five best reasons to hate Twilight.

Precisely because the Twilight franchise is more than just a goofy boxed-set of romance novels, a la Barbara Cartland or Danielle Steele (both of whom, no kidding, are far better writers than Meyer), The Twilight Experience IS scary and people should be warned.

I'm serious.

As far as I'm concerned, the least scary parts of Twilight concern blood-sucking vampires and/or unborn babies chomping on a teen-mom's cervix to get free. Those are the fun parts compared to the latent, covert lessons of feminine subjection, abjection, and erasure of self inherent in the novels.

Of course, that could just be my girlish way of looking at things.

Okay, ready? Here are the five best reasons to hate Twilight:

1. The ONLY real reason young women like Twilight is because of Edward. That is sad.

Why? It's sad because vampire Edward is NOT who you want to end up with, especially for eternity.

Stuck with Edward's family in a sunless, airless, dull mansion, having conversations that hint at the possibility of ancient patterns of potential incest now repressed, not having sex, and eating game meats?It would be like being married to an Englishman but without the cute accent or the trace amounts of humor.
Also, after 119 years, shouldn't he be out of high school already? Give the boy a Kaplan program. Let him crack 1000 in his SATs by the 47th time and get the kid into a community college somewhere.

2. Let's get back to the sex, or lack of it, which is what hooks girls on the first volume: female readers love that Edward sleeps beside Bella and apparently only wants to kiss her neck.

Why do they like that? Because most real live (i.e. not-dead, not 100 year-old-plus) guys who come within touching distance (so to speak) spend their time lunging almost randomly at breasts and buttocks.The amateur kisses of actual boys taste of gum and burritos, and they breathe audibly through their noses while they slip their tongues down the girls' throats like they're lizards hunting for flies.

They are most decidedly not doing what Meyer's Bat Boy does in the all-important thirteenth chapter of the first book, in the passage that makes girls gasp with delight and cross their legs even if they don't know why: "he simply bent his face to mine, and brushed his lips slowly along my jaw, from my ear to my chin, back and forth. I trembled."

Actual boys are not models of aloof, self-contained self-control; they are like Labrador retrievers. Girls should be aware of the fact that, when they encounter an immaculately groomed, perfectly manicured, impeccably dressed, polite, restrained young man who initially avoids their company when paired with them during science lab, what they have not met is the man of their dreams. What they have met is their new best gay male friend.

3. We should be appalled by Edward because Edward takes away Bella's keys to her very own car saying "You're intoxicated by my very presence" whereupon she says--wait for it--"There was no way around it; I couldn't resist him in anything."

Fifty years of the women's movement and that's what we get: "I couldn't resist him in anything"?

How nuts is this? Lucy Ricardo showed more backbone! Lambchop the Puppet showed more backbone than this "Lamb" does!

How about if Bella kept her own keys--and her own integrity--and drove away from the narcissistic bastard?

By the way, the runner-up for this position was a line from an earlier chapter where Bella exclaims "I couldn't imagine anything about me that could be in any way interesting to him."

For all those folks who say we're in a post-feminist generation: guess we still have a teensy bit of work on the whole self-esteem-building business for our girls, yes?

4. Back to the self-description of the characters as specific members of the food chain: girls, remember that if you're the lamb and he's the lion, you may lie down together,but you're still an entree.

5. Drum roll, please, as we get to the finale: "About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him- and I didn't know how potent that part may be- that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him."

(That line is on page 195-- although curiously enough, when the passage is quoted on the back cover of the trade paperback, "potent" is changed to "dominant" and I bet we can imagine why.)

So the big reason to loathe Twilight? Fear of your lover should not be an aphrodisiac. Ever.

Let's sum up, shall we? Why is Twilight scarier for a grown-up woman than it is for a younger one?

Because we understand the implications.

Because we know that even as a romantic fantasy, it's a damaging one; that even for a trashy book, it's a lousy one; and that even-or especially-as an for escape for a young woman who's longing to break out of her everyday confinements, it's a trap.

Here is Rebecca Black. Her music has begun to take over the Internet with the song "Friday" that hit the Internet about 3 weeks ago. It's been all over and basically ruined every Friday for me. The over use of autotune and awkard lyrics and dancing is just a slap in the face to anyone with talent that deserves to be famous. If that really is something someone would want for their lives.

I really loved this guy's response to Jenna Rose's video. He honestly says it best. Mainly because he says it with a British accent.


The people that are putting these girls out here like this are THEIR PARENTS! Seriously? Don't parents have higher goals for their children now? What happened to wanting your child to be a good person? Or wanting them to change the world or be a revolution for the world? I don't understand this craze for fame. It's Disney that's done this with people like Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber influencing this generation.

St. Patrick: Man, Myth & Holiday
Learn interesting facts and tidbits about the beloved St. Patrick.

St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints.

Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461.

Along with St. Nicholas and St. Valentine, the secular world shares our love of these saints. This is also a day when everyone's Irish.

There are many legends and stories of St. Patrick, but this is his story.

Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland, probably Kilpatrick. His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Britian in charge of the colonies.

As a boy of fourteen or so, he was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. Ireland at this time was a land of Druids and pagans. He learned the language and practices of the people who held him.

During his captivity, he turned to God in prayer. He wrote

"The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain."

Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from Godin which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britian, where he reunited with his family.

He had another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him "We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more."

He began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years.

Later, Patrick was ordained a bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He arrived inIreland March 25, 433, at Slane. One legend says that he met a chieftain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill Patrick. Patrick converted Dichu (the chieftain) after he was unable to move his arm until he became friendly to Patrick.

Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, converting many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and entire kingdoms converted to Christianity when hearing Patrick's message.

Patrick by now had many disciples, among them Beningnus, Auxilius, Iserninus, and Fiaac, (all later canonized as well).

Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.

He died at Saul, where he had built the first church.

Why a shamrock?

Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and has been associated with him and the Irish since that time.

Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in Godshould be a shining example to each of us. He feared nothing, not even death, so complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission.

A woman had finished her baking, so she asked her daughter to take a freshgalette and a pot of cream to her grandmother who lived in a forest cottage. The girl set off, and on her way she met a bzou [a werewolf].

The bzou stopped the girl and asked, "Where are you going? What do you carry?"
"I'm going my grandmother's house," said the girl, "and I'm bringing her bread and cream."
"Which path will you take?" the bzou asked. "The Path of Needles or the Path of Pins?"
"I'll take the Path of Pins," said the girl.
"Why then, I'll take the Path of Needles, and we'll see who gets there first."

The girl set off, the bzou set off, and the bzou reached Grandmother's cottage first. He quickly killed the old woman and gobbled her up, flesh, blood, and bone - except for a bit of flesh that he put in a little dish on the pantry shelf, and except for a bit of blood that he drained into a little bottle. Then the bzou dressed in Grandmother's cap and shawl and climbed into bed.

When the girl arrived, the bzou called out, "Pull the peg and come in, my child."
"Grandmother," said the girl, "Mother sent me here with a galette and a cream."
"Put them in the pantry, child. Are you hungry?
"Yes, I am, Grandmother."
"Then cook the meat that you'll find on the shelf. Are you thirsty?"
"Yes, I am, Grandmother."
"Then drink the bottle of wine you'll find on the shelf beside it, child."
As the young girl cooked and ate the meat, a little cat piped up and cried, "You are eating the flesh are your grandmother!"
"Throw your shoe at that noisy cat," said the bzou, and so she did.
As she drank the wine, a small bird cried, "You are drinking the blood of your grandmother!"
"Throw your other shoe at that noisy bird," said the bzou, and so she did.
When she finished her meal, the bzou said, "Are you tired from your journey, child? Then take off your clothes, come to bed, and I shall warm you up."
"Where shall I put my apron, Grandmother?"
"Throw it on the fire, child, for you won't need it anymore."
"Where shall I put my bodice, Grandmother?"
"Throw it on the fire, for you won't need it anymore."
The girl repeats this question for her skirt, her petticoat, and her stockings. The bzou gives the same answer, and she throws each item on the fire. As she comes to bed, she says to him, "Grandmother, how hairy you are!"

"Then go outside," the bzou agrees, "but mind that you come back again quick. I'll tie your ankle with a woolen thread so I'll know just where you are." He ties her ankle with a sturdy thread, but as soon as the girl has gone outside she cuts the thread with her sewing scissors and ties it to a plum tree. The bzou, growing impatient, calls out, "What, have you finished yet, my child?" When no one answers, he calls again. "Are you watering the grass or feeding the trees?" No answer. He leaps from bed, follows the thread, and finds her gone.

The bzou gives chase, and soon the girl can hear him on the path just behind her. She runs and runs until she reaches a river that's swift and deep. Some laundresses work on the river bank. "Please help me cross," she says to them. They spread a sheet over the water, holding tightly to its ends. She crosses the bridge of cloth and soon she's safe on the other side.

Now the bzou reaches the river, and he bids the women help him cross. They spread a sheet over the water — but as soon as he is halfway across, the laundresses let go. The bzou falls into the water and drowns.

So I suppose that one of my favorite blogs Miss Indie recently did something called 6 confessions.

I figured I'd do it too. Kinda as an excuse to show you all her beautiful blog that I adore.

6. I'm petrified of talking to people when I first meet them. I freak out and then act overly friendly to make up for it which actually tends to set them back.

5. I'm kinda a shopaholic. When I get stressed out I buy things, and I don't eat. I'll give up food for new clothes. It's really bad.

4. I didn't believe in love for real until I was about sixteen or seventeen. Not because I eventually fell in love, but moreso because I just learned what love actually was through God and learned that God's love applies to all love.

3. I actually don't believe Christianity is the right religion. I think all religions are overall the same. They are all the same God and it's just cultural differences that have made the distinctions. When it comes right down to it, Love is the overall goal.

2. When I'm bored, I write love letters. To my future husband whom I have yet to meet. Telling him that I don't know him but I know now that I love him because I'm spending my time working on being the kind of woman he'd like to take as a wife.

1. When I'm REALLY bored. I watch cheesy Dramas. Thanks to recent events I'm watching the entire series of Greek. Do not judge me.

Students 'like a little' online flirting

Have you ever caught someone's eye while walking to class and wished you could get to know them a little better, or had a crush on someone you see around campus and wanted to tell them how you feel? Well, on Jan. 19, the first message on Hamline's Like a Little wall was posted, starting an extensive chain of online flirtation.

Likealittle.com (LAL) is a website designed for students to go online and post a short description of someone they admire, in the hopes that they will see it and reciprocate. Most descriptions include the place where they saw the person, their hair color and their gender. Underneath, students can write a little something about this person or hint at who they are, and people have the option to comment on it. Users can create their own account if they want, so that they can get notifications when someone comments on something they have posted or liked. In the settings after users make their account, they can also follow a certain location, such as Klas or Sorin Dining Hall, and all of the posts that tag that site will appear in their updates section. LAL also has a chat feature, where students can talk to other people who are on the site.

LAL users can easily maintain their anonymity because each time they comment on someone's post or chat with someone, their screen pseudonym is the name of a fruit or vegetable. However, this can pose a problem if they want to find someone again after they've talked to them.

When asked what LAL makes him think about the way students communicate today, Dean of Students Alan Sickbert talked about LAL's similarities to other social networking sites.

"I think it's kind of a carry-on from Facebook to some degree in that, instead of people talking face to face - seeing each other and actually saying things - people rely upon, you know, these social networks to kind of do their work even when it's somebody across the hall or that they pass every day in the library or see in class," Sickbert said. "It's kind of a crutch for a lot of people when I wish they would do it more face to face."

Hamline's page hasn't been around very long, but there are already a lot of posts by people around campus. Although LAL discourages using full names, offensive or sexually explicit posts or other inappropriate language, some of the posts have already become somewhat provocative. 

Posts like "I saw you inside the bathroom. Awesome," and "I carved your name into the inside of my wardrobe," suggest that people may already be taking this too far. However, anything users are offended by or wish to delete can be easily taken off the site by clicking the "remove" button under any post. 

Other Twin Cities colleges such as St. Thomas, Bethel, Northwestern and St. Cate's have had pages on LAL for a while now. However, the nature of their posts tend to be a little different than Hamline's. 
For example, Bethel's LAL page is full of mostly tame, cute comments about people, like "Wish you would notice me more often and be my Valentine. You are funny, attractive, and seem to be a man of God. Maybe by this time next year we'll be something," but Northwestern's can be surprisingly vulgar, with quotes such as "lost: key to chastity belt. jaw sore."

An amazing week.

On Monday, I spent the entire day with Maggie who has become a very close friend of mine over the past few weeks together. We had both been rushing the sorority at our college Delta Tau. We went to the mall on Monday and spent the day browsing around and just talking about girls and life and boys ha ha! On Tuesday she hung out with me and my friends at dinner and we watched Mama Mia in the lounge at at school. Then we went to improv club. After coming back to my dorm after Improv Club my roommate gave me something that some of the girls in Delta Tau had dropped off for me... It was my Bid Card! I'm a Delta Tau Pledge <3 That was pretty exciting
Then After days of awesomeness one after another I saw the play at my school called The Shape of Things and first I saw it with Misia, Alex and Diana along with Chacha who came in to visit, then yesterday I saw it again with the girl who is planning on being my big sis Katie :) Then Maggie came over and spent the night and she and I ate pizza and watched Greek and Sydney White (Can you say Greek theme? lol)
Tomorrow is the pinning ceremony for DT and so I'll post some pictures of things after that tomorrow!
